Spotlight: Crossfire of Love by Ella Jade

Crossfire of Love's Anniversary Tour
Crossfire of Love will be on sale for $1.99 for the month of March.

Blurb: Can an arranged marriage lead to love?
Recent college graduate Gabriella has finally married the man of her dreams, the older, charismatic attorney Lorenzo Martinez. She's had a crush on him for as long as she can remember and always imagined they'd one day find their happily ever after. Unfortunately, they enter into a union arranged by their fathers.

Lorenzo is charming, protective, and loyal to his crime lord father Carlo. When Carlo asks Lorenzo to marry Gabriella he jumps at the opportunity. He's been drawn to her for many years and knows by marrying her he's helping to protect her father.

Gabby is resentful and won't be Lorenzo's charity case. But sparks fly and the couple soon gives into their desire, realizing they were meant to be together.

Excerpt:
Lorenzo walked up the porch steps, turning to stare at her. "Are you coming, Gabriella?" No one but Lorenzo and his father called her by her full name. She liked when Lorenzo said it. He'd always made it sound so formal and sexy.

These were the first words he had spoken to her since they left the courthouse. They were married in the chambers of the prestigious Judge John Cartwright. He'd been a family friend of the Martinezes for many years. He was their go-to man whenever they needed something done fast and legally. Well, legal in her new father-in-law's eyes anyway.

She hurried up the steps and followed Lorenzo inside their new home. It was built within a matter of months after she'd agreed to marry him. Carlo wanted them to have their privacy, but he also wanted to keep them close. He didn't trust she'd hold up her end of the bargain, and keeping her on the property was the best way to ensure she wouldn't run.

It was silly, really. How could she run from a family like this? They had ties all over the world. There wasn't any place she could escape to that they wouldn't know about. She was a woman of her word. She said she would marry Lorenzo and she did. She'd find a way to cope. She always had.

Lorenzo pulled his jacket off, poured himself a scotch, and then loosened his tie. "Would you like a drink?"

"No, thank you," she said.

Most brides would be dancing the night away and drinking champagne by this point in their wedding night. She didn't think that was part of Lorenzo's plan.

"I didn't think you'd go through with it." He sipped the amber colored liquid as he looked her over.

"I said I would."

"I know, but when push actually came to shove, I thought you'd run."

"You don't know me that well," she said. "I don't run."

"Good." He smirked as he put the glass to his lips.

Gabby couldn't take her eyes away from those lips. She'd never had the pleasure of having them on her own. Judge Cartwright hadn't asked him to kiss his bride. She hated herself for thinking about him that way.

"You could've stopped this. Why didn't you?" she asked.

As they stood in front of the judge, she kept hoping he'd put an end to the charade and stop the wedding. It didn't make sense to her why he had agreed to marry her. She didn't have a choice. Her father's gambling debts made sure of that. But she didn't understand why he'd allowed things to get as far as they had.

"I was just as trapped as you were." He downed the rest of his scotch.

She didn't believe that. She knew he respected his dad, but she didn't get why he wouldn't have put his foot down and said no to such a life-altering decision.

"You could've told your father no from the beginning. Why would you agree to marry someone if you didn't have to?"

"Look." He shook his head. "It's done now. We're going to have to make the best of it."

"Make the best of it?" She plopped down on the leather sofa. "I'm twenty-two years old. I just graduated from college, and you want me to make the best of it?"

"I know this isn't what you might have wanted, but it is what it is. You agreed, and now it's done. You can't go back on it now. My father won't forgive that."

Review: Murphy's Law by Jennifer Lowery

Murphy’s Law
Contemporary Romance

Blurb:
Tag: Nowhere to go. No place to hide.
Home is the last place Jon Murphy can go. After being held captive in Tazbekistan, he returns to the States only to find he can’t face his mom and sisters with what he did while he was a prisoner, so he retreats to the mountains.
Widow Sara Sheldon has made a lifetime of mistakes and is now running scared from her husband’s powerful family, who are determined to take her daughter away from her. When her little girl goes missing in the Rockies, Sara enlists the only help she can find: a gruff recluse with tracking skills to admire and a body to covet.
A storm strands Sara and her daughter at Murphy’s cabin, leaving her no choice but to hope her in-laws don’t catch up while she plans where to run next. Murphy resents the invasion of his privacy, but can’t seem to keep his mind--or his hands--off Sara. How can she stand to look at him, with all his scars? He’s not nearly as honorable as she might think…only enough to make sure she’s safe, and then he’ll go back to being alone, the way he should be.
CONTENT WARNING: Sexual content

Hi Melissa and all your fabulous readers out there *waves* Thank you so much for having me today! My contemporary romance, Murphy’s Law, released this month so I’m very excited to be here! Thank you so much for sharing it with me!!
In honor of my release I am giving away a $5.00 Amazon gift card to one lucky commenter so please leave me a comment with your EMAIL to be entered to win!!

Murphy’s Law touched a deep part of me. For many reasons. Mostly, because the heroine, Sara, had to face one of my biggest fears. Overcoming this fear was hard for her and Murphy was there to help her through it, but not without being forced to face his own demons. It was quite a journey for the two of them. For all of us. I didn’t come out of it untouched. I think writers face their own fears and hurts and needs when they write, even if they don’t realize it. Writing is therapeutic. And I love it even when I’m putting my characters through the ringer. I once read that you should put your characters in a tree and throw rocks at them. It’s a play off a formulation for a movie script, I believe. And excellent advice to add conflict and tension to your writing.
Well, Jon and Sara certainly had a lot of rocks thrown at them, but they weren’t always physical rocks. Many of them were emotional. I thought I’d give you a chance to talk with them and see how they handled some of those moments when I tormented them J Please welcome Jon and Sara.
Jennifer: Thanks for coming today. Did either of you ever think your life would end up in a book?
Jon: No, and I don’t like it.
Sara: *small chuckle* Not really, no.
Jennifer: Are you happy with the genre I placed you in?
Jon: *shrugs*
Sara: Definitely. I like contemporary romance. I’ve actually started reading it.
Jennifer: What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
Sara: *blushes and smiles* Definitely the romance. Thank you so much for bringing Murphy into my life, Jen. Our love life is incredible.
Jon: *scowls*
Jennifer: Did you have a hard time convincing me to write any particular scenes for you?
Jon: No, you seemed ready to write.
Sara: I agree. You were very willing. I think we were more hesitant than you sometimes. But it all worked out in the end.
Jennifer: If you could rewrite anything in the book, what would it be?
Jon: *voice hard* I never would have let Sara leave the ranch on her own. What were you thinking, Jen?
Sara: *puts her hand over Murphy’s* Jon, you know why Jennifer wrote that scene. She had to. It was supposed to go that way. I wanted it.
Jon: You could have been killed.
Sara: But I wasn’t.
*Murphy scowls but relents*
Jennifer: How about an easy question. What do you like most about where you live?
Sara: *dreamy smile* The ranch. It’s beautiful. There’s nowhere like it in the world. Peaceful. Healing. It healed me.
Jon: *looks at his wife and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear* Both of us.
Jennifer: On that note, I’ll wrap up this interview. *leaves the couple alone just as Murphy leans in to kiss his wife*
Thank you for having me today, XX!! I just want to send out a big THANK YOU to all my readers out there! Without you I wouldn’t be here. My wish is to one day meet each and every one of you so I can personally thank you for your generosity and support!
All my best,
Jennifer

Review:
I really enjoyed this book. From the very start it had me captivated and I just had to keep turning the pages to see what was going to happen next.

Murphy is my favourite kind of man hard on the outside (in more ways than one) with a big gooey centre you just want to gobble up. Sara is most definitely not immune to his charms and neither was I.

I loved the way this story played out and I admit I kind of wanted more at the end just so I could read more of this couple.

Overall I give this 4 out of 5 a great read well worth it.

Murphy sat at the kitchen table, half in the shadows created by the soft light glowing above the stove, hair tousled from sleep. Naked to the waist. A bottle of amber liquid sat in front of him, an empty glass in his hand. Her gaze landed on his muscled shoulders and trailed across his tanned chest. So much for getting him out of her mind. Now she had the real thing to dream about. Looking at the dark hairs that veed down his chest and disappeared behind the table, she decided he’d been right. He was a dangerous man.
She tore her gaze away from temptation and looked at the granite lines of his face. Beneath the hardness of his expression, something haunting lingered. Drawn, she circled the table to the opposite end.
Murphy met her eyes with coldness that should have sent her running for the safety of her room, but she remained standing in place. He wanted to chase her away. This time she wasn’t running.
“Mind if I join you?” She grabbed a glass and from the cupboard and reached over his shoulder for the bottle.
His hand snaked out and wrapped around hers, preventing her from pouring a drink.
“I mind,” he growled.
“Well, get over it. I need a drink.”
Scowling, he let go of her hand and allowed her to pour a glass for herself. She refilled his glass next, set the bottle on the table, moved to the chair beside him and sat, lifting her glass.
“Cheers.” She brought the glass to her lips. His gaze as she drained the glass made her fight the urge to cough as the fiery liquid burned its way down her throat. Seconds later she felt the familiar warming sensation as it numbed her insides. Her eyes filled with tears. She blinked them away and reached for the bottle.
Murphy held it away from her. “What are you doing?”
“Having a drink. I’m not in the mood for warm milk tonight.”
His eyes darkened and narrowed. “You don’t strike me as the drinking type.”
She wasn’t, but tonight it sounded good. Maybe it would soothe away her problems and make her forget how screwed-up her life was. Talking about Kent earlier had brought back painful memories. She didn’t want to feel that misery anymore.
“Maybe you don’t know my type,” she said.
He studied her closely for a moment before rubbing a hand over his face. “Go back to bed, Sara. Sleep it off.”
“I don’t want to sleep it off. I’m tired of thinking about it.”
Maybe it was the whisky, or his naked chest, or the part of her that had been dormant for six years coming back to life. More than anything she wanted to discover it with Murphy, her strong, scarred hero.
She rose to her feet. He watched warily as she stepped in front of him and positioned herself between him and the table. He leaned back in his chair and sent her a thunderous look.
“You and I are alike in many ways, Murphy,” she said softly. “We’ve both lost pieces of ourselves we can’t ever get back and it has forced us into a life of loneliness and solitude. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of being alone.”
He pinned her with a hard glare. “I’m not what you want. Go back to your room before I do something we’ll both regret in the morning.”
His harshly spoken words sent little electrical shocks through her body.
“I’m tired of people telling me what I want.”

Interview/Review: Bring Me Back by Karen Booth

Hey Melissa, thank you so much for hosting me today. I’m really excited to be here!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a Midwestern girl transplanted in the South, raised on 80s music, Judy Blume and the films of John Hughes. I’m also a married mom of two and a writer. I’m a big music fan and worked for more than a decade in the music industry before I left my career behind to have children. Writing came after that. In my spare time, I like to bake or putter around in the garden, and I’m pretty handy, but don’t confuse me with Martha Stewart. With two kids, not much around here is perfect. I’m also completely addicted to college basketball (Go Heels!).

Tell us a little about the book you’re here to promote.

Bring Me Back is the first novel I ever wrote, although it’s the fourth to be published. It’s the story of Claire Abby, a single-mom and music journalist, who lands a career-defining interview with Christopher Penman, the British rock star she was obsessed with in high school. It’s a modern fairytale in many ways—I put a very relatable woman into a dream scenario and let her figure out a way to make it work. The love story between Claire and Christopher is the central arc, but the relationship between Claire and her 17 year-old daughter, Samantha, plays an important role in the book. So does the strained relationship between Claire and her father.

What was your main inspiration for this story?

A dream about John Taylor from Duran Duran started it all. I was in my early 30s, on vacation in St. Barts with my husband and daughter, who was not quite two years old at the time. Out of the blue one night, I had a very vivid and steamy dream about JT, who was in fact the British rock star I was obsessed with in high school. It was very odd, albeit enjoyable. I hadn’t thought about the man in years and have no idea what made him pop into my dream that night. I woke the next morning wondering what it would be like for a woman to meet her adolescent celebrity crush, many years later in life.

If your book was made into a movie, which stars would you want to play your hero and heroine?

It’s funny that you asked this question, because there is a circle of Bring Me Back fans on Twitter and this is a frequent topic of discussion among them. For Claire, I would go with Claire Danes. And the name is perfect! She’s a great combination of beauty and brains, and can handle the dead-serious parts of the story along with the more fun and sexy ones. I will mention that the Twitter circle prefers Naomi Watts, but something about her seems too severe for her to play the part of Claire.

Christopher is another matter. He’s a toughie, to say the least. One night on Twitter, Brad Pitt was brought up as an option and oh my—the uproar! Brad will not work. I wish that Gabriel Aubry could act, because he’s physically perfect, right down to the mesmerizing green eyes and tall, lanky frame. Jason Lewis is a good option, but I’m not sure he could do a convincing British accent. Alexander Skarsgard has been tossed around as a possibility, but his jaw isn’t square enough. What can I say? I’m picky when it comes to Christopher. I have to keep looking.

Describe your hero and heroine in five words.

Claire: Smart, loyal, stubborn, loving and determined.

Christopher: Charming, sexy, witty, dark and talented.

Music critic Claire Abby is a single mom dreading her daughter’s departure for college and worried that turning forty will leave her career running on fumes. She’s floored when she lands a Rolling Stone cover story on 80s British rock legend Christopher Penman. She spent her teenage years fantasizing he was her boyfriend.

In person, Christopher is everything Claire feared he’d be—charming, witty and unwilling to address the rumors he’s dodged for a decade. Still, she contains her adolescent fantasies and manages to earn his trust, unearthing the truth and the devastating secret behind it. His blockbuster story is her first priority when she returns home, a nearly impossible task when Christopher starts calling and flirting. She knows she should maintain a professional distance. She knows she should focus on the story. She knows it would be best to simply walk away. But how can she say “no” to the man she could never forget?

Review:
So, I'll be the first to admit the description of this book was not what had me wanting to review it, it was the cover and having finished the book I find it all the more poignant.  That being said I really enjoyed the book.

Claire is an empty nester in waiting when the job of a life time comes up and she jumps at it. From the get go it all seemed a little too easy for Claire but she soon learns everything isn't as it seems. The interactions with her daughter were wonderful and the though I felt a few times she capitulated to Chris far too soon without barely putting up a fight for me she was still a really relatable likeable character.

Chris OMG. Firstly I am going to throw my two cents worth in and say I totally had Chris Martin from Coldplay in my head as I read this book. And if I thought really hard i probably imagined his wife as Claire too. Now back to Chris he is the most sexy loveable character equal parts boy and man. I love how clueless he is sometimes and how he pushes Claire's boundaries at others.

Overall I give this 4 out of 5 This book is a must read for any woman who ever had a crush on a rockstar.

Excerpt:
Layla froze as he came back into view.
Gorgeous. A trim goatee covered his square jaw, making him look distinguished. She’d never thought Times Square was so big and small at the same time. Before, she hadn’t really thought of it at all except with some barely concealed disdain. She watched as he went about what appeared to be normal business, his thick shoulders bunching with every movement. He shuffled a few papers on his desk, sat down, and fiddled with his computer. Not once did he look out his window again. Layla ignored the sinking feeling at his lack of attention.
She refused to open the curtain the rest of the way and try to entice him, as much as she wished to. Because this could be almost as dangerous as another affair with a married man. So she contented herself with watching him until he looked up. Her breath caught in her throat. He shook his head and returned to his work. Could he feel her watching him? He glanced at her again. Could he see her watching him? She held his gaze through the half-inch gap in the fabric and waited, holding her breath until he looked down again. She dropped the curtain.
Her plan to release some steam and settle down had been blown to shreds, because now her stomach was knotted with the what-ifs. The soft carpet against the backs of her thighs tickled, urging her to move. Her body still felt too sensitive, too aroused. She needed to shower and get her head screwed on straight. And stay as far away from her window as possible until she figured out what to do.
Grabbing the edge of the table, Layla pulled herself up and slid off her high heels, using the solid surface beneath her fingers for support. She walked on shaky legs through the living room and kitchenette area, then into her bedroom and to the bathroom, refusing to look back and steal a glimpse. Thank God the curtains in the bedroom were closed too. She set her glasses on the sink. Had he been as turned on as she was?
She closed herself into the bathroom. Mulling over the ideas in her head, she rolled down her black thigh-highs one at a time. Maybe she could leave her curtains open tomorrow morning when she got home just to see what would happen. He probably wouldn’t even be there. She didn’t know whether to be relieved or disappointed about that. She shook her head, deciding it didn’t matter.
After unhooking her bra, she tossed it and her panties in the corner with the rest of her dirties. The maids must love me. Though, of course, they did, and she knew it. They’d told her before that they didn’t mind taking care of her, and for that she was grateful. She turned on the hot water and stepped into the shower. She let the heat seep into her muscles and relax her shoulders. Sitting down in the tub, Layla grabbed the stopper and let the showerhead fill the basin with water. She lay back until the water covered her stomach, all the while trying to decide if she should give in to her wild nature and torture Mr. Times Square.

What will happen to this couple when the night ends and they return to the real world outside the door of Secrets?

Has one of the gods of love finally taken on a challenge he cannot fulfill?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
One too many margaritas and she was about to spend the first night of her thirties holed up in a sex club. Hmm. Not much of an excuse, really, when she thought about it. Not like I'm drunk or anything. Three drinks, mostly laced with watered down lime juice, did not a crazy woman make.
So why the heck was she standing here on the street in front of a door covered in padded black leather, about to accept the dare that her friends had automatically assumed she'd refuse?
"Do it," Theo had insisted, and the other three echoed his laughing plea. "You're thirty, now, Ella; it's time you did something exciting in your life. For once."
Only Kade was silent, his long, slim frame rigid, staring at her with those penetrating hazel eyes that reminded her of an amber gemstone bracelet she'd recently assessed. He'd been so quiet tonight she couldn't read him, even though they'd been friends for close to ten years—a third of her lifetime.
"Kade?" What was going on behind that dead-pan expression? "What do you think? Should I go ahead with it?"
He shrugged and shook back the light brown hair that always threatened to flop down into his eyes. "It's not you, Ellie. You're too…vanilla for what's behind that door. I think you should go home."
Too vanilla? The muscles across her shoulders and neck began to tie themselves into an unpleasant knot. Oh, Kade. You should have known better than that.
She smoothed her hands down her short black dress, adjusting the hem of the skirt over her hips and giving herself a moment to gather courage, before pressing the buzzer set discreetly into the wall beside the door. "Right then," she said. "Guess I'm going in."
