Spotlight: Boots on the Ground by Angela S Stone

BLURB:

Ash Cooper and Jason McCarty know they need to do one thing, and one thing alone: stay alive.

An IED attack destroyed their convoy and left them both injured in the high desert of Afghanistan and running from insurgents. They take refuge with a group of Afghan civilians, and their only hope of rescue is two satellite phones that might be damaged beyond repair.

Ash and Jason join forces with a British army nurse to survive the harsh living conditions. As days to turn to weeks, they think of home, the husbands they left behind, and the lives they want to return to.

But with food rations running short, the elders angry at them, and the hope of rescue lost, Ash and Jason start to give up, and in the end turn to each other in their struggle for survival.

Excerpt:

The doorbell rang, and David told her, “Yeah, I’m awake.” He flipped the covers off and grabbed a housecoat. Why in the heck would Monica, his sergeant, be here? She wasn’t even scheduled to work today.

Ryan, his oldest, beat David to the door. “Hi, Aunt Monica!” Ryan chirped at her.

“Monica?” David asked when he saw her. She wore her red serge and was accompanied by Father Callaghan, the local pastor. David immediately had a sinking feeling.

“Ryan, why don’t you go downstairs to the rec room? Take Mandy and Kevin with you,” Monica told David’s oldest.

The boy glanced from his pseudo-aunt to his father and then dashed away calling for his younger siblings.

“Can we come in, David?”

“Yeah sure, sorry. I worked last night,” David said by way of explanation for his attire as he led them into the living room. He sat down in the chair. Monica and Father Callaghan took the sofa. “What’s this about, Monica?”

“Last night Jason was in a convoy travelling to a remote outpost in the northern district of the Balkh province.”

David felt his heart plunge. No, please God, no, not his Jason.

“The convoy hit an IED. Most of the vehicles in the convoy were completely destroyed.  Jason wasn’t killed in the blast; however he is missing in action along with another Civilian Police Officer, Ashley Cooper.”

Spotlight: Isle of Sensuality by Aimée Duffy

Isle of Sensuality by Aimée Duffy

Who knew being with Mr. Wrong could be so right?

Caitlyn Hart is shooting her first movie, and she doesn't want to screw it up. Still, she's on a deadline and when her co-star, Mr. Hot Shot Campbell, holds filming up, he's immediately on her shit list. But she can't ignore his charms for long or the overpowering want she feels for him. Even though she knows he's her Mr. Wrong, she doesn't mind him being her Mr. Right Now. If only her silly heart would stay immune.

Having been burned once, Jake Campbell doesn't have the capacity to love, but that doesn't mean relationships of a purely sexual nature are off limits. After all, a man has needs. His sexy co-star with fire red hair and a passion to match ignites his own desire and he sets out to convince her a fling is the only way to scratch the proverbial itch. Little did he figure that she'd be the one to penetrate the thick scars on his heart and make him feel.

Excerpt:

Are you looking forward to tomorrow?" Jake asked.

Caitlyn's brows pulled together as she tried to work out what was so special about the following day. Nothing came to mind. "Tomorrow?"

Jake turned to look at her, the cheeky grin back in place which had her heart beating out an unsteady rhythm. "Our characters will share their first kiss."

Her eyes widened as her face grew hot. How could she have forgotten? Probably because she'd been too busy stressing over the love scene to worry about much else.

"Not particularly," she breathed. Jake studied her with a teasing glint in his eyes. Her face flamed.

"Not buying it."

Irritation flared again and she clenched he"r hands into fists. She had to remind herself to keep her cool around him. She was supposed to be torturing him, not being tortured herself. Still, the thought that in less than twenty-four hours she'd have his lips on hers sent little heated jitters coursing through her body.

She forced her stiff shoulders to shrug, mortified by her lack of acting ability in his presence. "You can believe what you like."

He pulled the cling film from a platter of sandwiches and offered her the plate. Caitlyn picked up a smoked salmon piece and brought it to her lips. She groaned as the flavor of the bread and fish played across her taste buds. Jake's gaze went to her mouth and, feeling a little vindictive, she licked her lips. He swallowed and a thrill ran through her as she realized perhaps she really was torturing him.

With his focus still on her lips, he asked, "Do you really want our first kiss to be in front of the camera?"

The vindictive thrill vanished as panic started to creep in. She was alone with a man she barely knew for the second time in less than a day. Her thoughts were spinning with bad case scenarios and she couldn't even hear the voice of logic in her head telling her she was overreacting. All she could think of was she was there—literally flirting with danger—alone with Jake and no one had any idea where she was.

"Hey, Caitlyn, what's wrong?" Jake's eyes were serious and he looked concerned. Her inner fear must have shown in her expression, but she couldn't feel embarrassed about it yet. The panic was still forefront in her mind.

"Why did you bring me here?" She hated that her voice sounded small and frightened.

His eyes widened in surprise. "I brought you here because it's the nicest place I've seen on the island and I wanted to spend time with you. Having dinner where we could watch the sun set was all I had in mind."

She relaxed a little at his words. Jake sounded like he was telling the truth, and perhaps a little affronted she had doubted him. "I'm sorry, I overreacted." The voice of logic didn't have to whisper that in her head, it was obvious.

He shrugged and a hint of a smile played around the edges of his mouth. "I won't force you to do anything you're not comfortable with. That's not my style." He paused, took a bite of his sandwich, and swallowed before he continued. "Though if you wanted something to happen, I certainly wouldn't protest."

He winked at her and for an awful moment, Caitlyn had the wildest urge to close the distance between them and plant her lips on his, pulling herself against his well-sculpted chest.

"That won't ever happen," Caitlyn said with bite, trying to convince herself more than him.

He laid his head in her lap, and she savored the feel of it, the weight of him against her as he relaxed onto her legs. Her hand stole into his dyed-blond hair, ruffling though it, the texture like silk under her fingers. She felt his wolf within him, reaching for her touch and knew that he denied himself as much as her. She stroked from his hair down into his beard and she watched as his lips parted and he drew a ragged breath.

Annie stood quietly, then tiptoed from the room, closing the door behind her.

“Fionn,” Monica whispered. “Why are you doing this to us?”

“I don’t know, dammit.” His eyes clenched shut as he sat back on his heels, burying both hands in his hair. Finally, he looked up and his eyes met hers, agony hovering just under the surface. “I’m falling apart, just being close to you.”

“Kiss me,” she demanded. He looked at her, startled.

“C’mon, Finny, kiss me,” she repeated.

“Mo…”

“No, Fionn Murphy.” She stood up, tugging him to his feet with her. “You need to know something. I’m your mate. I know what that is, how it feels. You’ve never been mated before. You’ve played around, but you don’t know what it feels like to kiss your mate. Don’t you want to know? Aren’t you even the littlest bit curious?” She stood up on the tips of her toes, pressing her face to the skin of his throat and inhaling his scent.

Oh Goddess, up close he smelled even more intense and amazing .

“Mo,” he pleaded. She met his eyes and saw in them a hunger that sent echoes of need into her. Feeling the heady power of seduction, she leaned forward and licked from the hollow between his collarbones up to his ear, and she bit, scissoring the lobe between her teeth. She felt the rumble of a growl run through him, and he pushed her away. Her eyes closed, tears forming with a sting behind her nose.

Then his hands were bracketing her face and his lips crushed down hard on hers. This was no gentle kiss. Nothing like Angelo’s caring caresses, intended for comfort. This kiss wasn’t about caring. It was full of anger, lust, regret. But as his tongue swept through her mouth and his elemental male taste tingled all the way to her toes, she felt her teeth lengthen and she smiled against his lips. Her mate.

His assault on her mouth lost some of its fervor, replacing the urgency with languor as he swept his tongue through her mouth again and again as if he wanted to memorize her taste. Her hands fisted in the cotton of his tank top, pinching the nipple ring underneath. His hands sank into her hair, tugging. She felt with her tongue and realized his teeth had shifted too. The knowledge sent a victorious thrill through her.

He knew. He knew, dammit.

He pulled away, leaving her bereft. She watched as he dragged the back of his hand across his mouth in horror. “I’m sorry Mo. I should never—ever—have kissed you in anger.”

“If that’s the only way I can ever have you, I would take it,” she confessed. It broke her to admit it, but she knew the pull of mate to mate.

His eyes closed and a spasm of pain crossed his face.

“You deserve so much better,” he whispered. He ran a gentle hand down the side of her face and grimaced. “I have to go. We can talk, after I get back?”

She nodded. Of course they could talk. All they ever did was talk.

Excerpt:

"She's here." Jared's words came out in a whoosh of anticipation. They watched the black SUV with tinted windows as it pulled up to the front of the building. They stood in front of the grand capital tense, quiet—waiting.

A uniformed solider opened the front passenger side door and stood, surveying the crowd. He opened the back door. Max sucked in a deep breath and the sound broke the spell the other five men seemed to be under.

The crowd suddenly began shouting and the rabble of voices grew chaotic. The six men turned to watch a tall, grubby-looking man sprinting across the green grass of the capital lawn, running toward the SUV and their woman. A police officer tackled the man and the two rolled onto the ground. More officers swarmed the desperate man.

"I just want to touch her!" the wild-eyed man wailed as they cuffed him.
* * * *

Krista stepped out, and the screaming men frightened her. She saw a police officer tackle a man only a few yards away. She started to get back into the SUV, but one of the soldiers grabbed her arm gently.

"It's time, miss."

"I'm afraid."

"We'll protect you. It'll be all right. It's always like this on Giving Day. Don't worry. We will see you safely until you are under the guard of your private security."

This was everything she'd feared, only worse. She hadn't expected the protesters. Someone shouted the word "whore"; she knew the man's hateful word meant her. How any of them could think she'd asked for this was beyond her imagination.

Six young, well-dressed men stood in front of the steps of the large, white, domed building. They were looking at her with…possessiveness. The moment she saw them she knew that these men were her six, or more accurately, she was theirs.

Everything had been sort of slow motion, but then as the crowd grew more agitated, the soldiers quickly ushered her up the sidewalk. The governor didn't come out for the official ceremonial signing of The Giving right, too many threats to his life and ugly behavior had changed this day. As men who couldn't qualify grew angrier with the government, The Giving ceremony became less pomp and more circumstance; and the circumstance was, until they had the woman away from the crowd, they were all in danger. A secretary rushed out and handed the men the last of the paperwork to sign.

There wasn't a single introduction as the security, soldiers, and six young men surrounded Krista and rushed her around the corner and into a waiting limousine. They all hurried to get inside as the soldiers held back the men running toward them. Even inside the car, Krista could hear the angry shouting. The trunk slammed shut. Krista saw the driver slide into the front seat and the engine roared to life.
****

They left her alone. She sat down on the bed and air whooshed from her lungs. She shook a little due to nervous anticipation. Oh God, who should I pick? Choosing felt so very wrong to her. She may belong to these men for a long time, and the idea of alienating any of them, or getting off on a bad start, twisted her stomach in knots of nervous anxiety. She stood up and unpacked her few belongings. The closet looked so empty after she'd put her scant possessions into it. She began walking down the stairs and she heard their voices. Krista paused to listen, feeling a bit evil for eavesdropping.

"It's only right that she pick."

"We've all waited so long, shouldn't we draw straws or something?"

"For God's sake, she's a human being, not a new toy. Let the girl have her pick. We'll all have a chance."

"What if we all share her tonight? Then it's fair to all of us."

"It wouldn't be fair to Krista. If she was your new bride, would you want to pass her around to five other guys?"

"There's no more marriage, so the question isn't valid. The world isn't nice and romantic. The fact is, she'll have to sleep with all of us."

Excerpt:

After the interview, I hurried back to my hotel room. I changed out of my suit into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, swapped my heels for sneakers, and headed down to the wharf. I searched for over an hour before I finally found the Hotel Alexander. Walking onto the job site, I stopped the first guy in a hard hat that I could find.
“Excuse me.” I tapped the man on the shoulder.
“Yeah?” He eyed me suspiciously. “How can I help you?”
“I’m looking for Anthony Scott.”
“He’s up the scaffold.” He pointed at the mass of steel piping on the side of the building. “Hang on a sec, I’ll get him down for you.”
“Hey, Tony! There’s a chick here to see ya.” Anthony’s head popped over the edge of the scaffold. I looked up so he could see my face.
“Elise?” he asked, disbelief clear in his tone. I just nodded. “Stay right where you are. I’m coming down.” His whoop of excitement echoed off the surrounding buildings, making my heart beat just a little faster. As he hit the bottom of the scaffolding, he ran over to me, swept me up in his arms, and swung me around in the biggest bear hug I’d had in years.

Review: Holding On by Karen Stivali

When you have everything you’ve ever dreamed of, the hard part is Holding On. British NYU professor Daniel Gardner thinks life can’t get better than the day his three-year-old stepdaughter, Ella, calls him Daddy for the first time. Then his wife Marienne tells him she’s pregnant. Daniel is thrilled, but worried about Marienne’s health. Not wanting to cause her stress he turns to writing to calm his nerves. He pens a screenplay, thinking it’s nothing more than a mental health exercise, but when a colleague reads it and hands it to a producer, it turns into a production contract. Daniel accepts the offer and transfers to a teaching position at Dartmouth, hoping that small town living and a shorter commute will simplify his life. As he attempts to juggle his new responsibilities he gets an unexpected letter from Roger, the father he never knew. For the first time since they met, Daniel and Marienne are at odds; she wants him to give Roger a chance but Daniel wants nothing to do with the man he thinks abandoned his mother. As Daniel and Marienne struggle they must contend with interference from Daniel’s sexy ex-wife, who appears to want him back, and a handsome, all-too-helpful single dad who desires Marienne as more than a play-date pal. They must both confront deep-seated issues with trust and acceptance if they’re going to find a way to make their marriage work and hold on to the love they share.

Review:

So I read Meant To Be and loved it. So when I saw an opportunity to read it's sequel I jumped at the chance.

The idea of what happens after the HEA is one that intrigued me, so often I read a book and I just want more of it.

I enjoyed this book immensely and I loved seeing Daniel and Marienne happy together. Of course no HEA goes perfectly and they do have their share of trials.

Though I didn't quite enjoy this one as much as the first it is still a good sexy read.

Overall I give this 4 out of 5

Karen will be giving away one of her back list to a commenter so please leave your email address.

Excerpt:
Where the hell was the cranberry sauce?
Amy Easton turned down the aisle of baking goods, searching for the last item Martha needed her to get. She had to find the damned can. This holiday would be perfect if it fucking killed her. The chain on her boots jangled as she hunted. The gallon of milk and box of stick butter froze her hands, but they’d been out of carts and Martha needed them both for first thing in the morning.
She dodged an older lady pushing a heavy cart as she careened around the corner at the end of the aisle. She still didn’t spot the display. The stock boy had told her it was on aisle six, and here she stood at the end of aisle six, empty handed. Sighing, Amy turned and headed up the aisle again, her eyes roving left and right. She forced herself to slow down, fearing she’d miss the display.
Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be the same without it.
Martha had said the same thing earlier that evening when she’d sent Amy to the store. The woman was a Domestic Goddess. The way Mom used to be, the way Amy would never be. So when Martha had panicked after being unable to get in touch with her son on his way from the airport, Amy had volunteered to go get it. She’d be useless in the kitchen tomorrow, so it was the least she could do. Besides, it got her out of the house and away from the smooching her dad and Martha kept doing when they thought she wasn’t looking.
It was sweet, really. And Amy couldn’t be happier with the way Dad was slowly coming back to life under Martha’s tutunch something. Where the hell was that damn can?
There!
She spotted the display acroelage, but she could do without seeing her dad making out. She wanted to throw up her hands or pss the end of aisle six. One lonely can of cranberry sauce sat on the shelf, as if it had waited just for her. She hadn’t thought Martha would be the kind of person to leave the shopping till the last minute, but apparently a few things had slipped her mind this year. With Amy and her dad down visiting, she wouldn’t be surprised if Martha had been a little worried about how things would go.
A tall man with reddish brown curls was coming down the aisle diagonal to her. Heading for that damned can. She didn’t know where else to go around here to find one. She had to get to that can first. She picked up the pace and just as he turned the corner, she body checked his cart, flying back on her ass and dropping the milk and butter, just as the can of cranberry sauce flew off the s

Excerpt :
She reached for her fork and brushed the side of her thumb along her plate. Syrup dirtied her hand. She hadn’t realised the sticky fluid had spilled over her pancakes and onto the table. Without another thought, she lifted her digit and licked it. Both men watched with curious fascination as she rolled her tongue along the side of her hand. She half expected them to start panting.
Seeing how she had their full attention, she dipped a finger in the syrup and licked it again. Their eyes sparkled with hunger and she doubted it was for food.
“Mm…” she said.
“Damn,” Mark said. “I’m getting harder by the second.”
She swallowed the chuckle rising. “Maybe you should find a way to control your…hardness.”
She gave him a wicked grin as she dipped more digits in the syrup. Both eyed her as if they were ready to attack at any second. She touched her neck and dragged her slick fingers to her chest.
James shot up from his chair. “I suddenly feel starved.”
As he walked around the table, Val noticed the large bulge in his groin area. A quiver of desire ran through her and she clenched her thighs. What did he have planned for her?
He knelt at her side. “I believe you need help.” He grasped her wrist and spread each soiled digit in front of his face. Holding her forefinger, he slipped it into his mouth.
A craving for sex quickly replaced her need for food. He coiled his hot tongue around her finger and sucked on it. Her temperature rose while moisture increased between her legs.
Mark left his seat and came to stand behind her, yet still close to James. He placed one hand on the side of her face, and he used his other to prise the gap of her robe wider until he exposed her. “My favourite breakfast…beautiful breasts and pussy. I think James would agree it’s his, too.”
“Mm-hmm,” James mumbled while he continued sucking.
Mark tilted her face to meet his. When he sealed his lips over hers, her heart jumped a beat in excitement. He kissed her deeply and a soft moan rose from her. Her body longed for more from them. As if the two men could read her mind, they complied with her silent request. James parted her legs, then moved between them and slid his warm hands over her thighs. Mark glided his tongue down her neck and gently sucked at the area where the syrup coated her.
“I will have to agree with Mark,” James said, unfastening the cord on her robe. “Pussy is the best breakfast.” He pushed the cloth away and buried his head between her thighs.

BLURB:

When a series of failed relationships and business ventures have Monica Jackson doubting her self-worth, she turns to spell casting to attract positive energy and the opportunities needed to achieve her goals.  But can Monica’s belief in spells restore her belief in herself?

Monica creates a spell to find her soul mate, and one to ensure the success of her new romantic event planning company, Enhance Your Romance.  Monica is confident she has found her niche until divorce lawyer Reed Walker opens a practice next door to her office.  The anti-marriage slogan plastered on his office window, and his down-on-love clients, quickly prove detrimental to Monica’s business.  When his arrival appears to trigger a string of bad luck, Monica fears one of her spells sent negative energy into the universe and it has returned to her threefold.  Although Reed is beyond sexy, and she admires his self-confidence, she’ll do whatever it takes to get the universe back on her side, and Reed out of her life. No way is she losing another business.

Reed finds himself attracted to Monica’s beauty and her optimism. His job and his parents’ divorce have made him a pessimist, especially when it comes to love. However, he soon finds that Monica’s pro-love attitude is rubbing off on him, causing him to lose his edge.  If Reed doesn’t distance himself from Monica, he’ll likely destroy his reputation as a pit bull divorce lawyer.

Can Monica and Reed look past what they might be losing to realize the love they have found?

Excerpt:

Prologue

“A spell … ” Hope mused, then her face lit up. “If there’s a spell to attract a man to a woman, there must be one to repel women from a man. Right?”

“Spells shouldn’t involve negative energy. Sending out negative energy can cause it to return threefold. They aren’t intended to harm someone or make them do something against their will.” Jordan had drilled this into her head.

“I wouldn’t be making Kyle do anything against his will. I’d be warning women to stay away from him.”

Sounded borderline.

“Please,” Hope whined, picking a clump of batter from her long, wavy hair.

Monica let out a defeated groan. “All right.” Hope would never actually cast the spell anyway. When they were young, Hope refused to wear a Casper costume for Halloween because she didn’t believe in ghosts. She was closed-minded when it came to paranormal or New Age beliefs. And you had to truly believe in a spell for it to work.

Monica set down the bowl of salt and grabbed a pencil and pad of paper off her desk and handed them to Hope. “Write this down. It’s called,” she tapped a hot pink nail against her lip, “the dirtbag spell. Take one of Kyle’s socks, fill it with dirt, and add a photo of him. It’s critical you aren’t in the photo.” Monica paced, tightening the sash on her lavender silk robe. “Include something of his like … ”

“His new Rolex?”

Personally, Monica would list the watch on eBay and pray for a bidding war. But Hope, no matter how ticked off, was too timid to sell Kyle’s precious watch, and too frugal to risk damaging it by mixing it with dirt.

“That’s fine. Sew up the sock and bury it in your front yard. It’ll warn all women he’s a dirtbag.”

Hope poised the pencil against her lower lip, reviewing the spell. “Don’t I have to say something when I bury it, like a chant?”

What happened to being spell ignorant?

“Bury it in the moonlight while saying … ” Monica scrambled for a few rhyming lines, “moonlight, glowing bright, warn all women in your sight, the man who lives in this house, is a dirtbag and a total louse.”

“Perfect.” Hope sprang from the bed, looking inspired. “Kyle’s at work. I’m going over to the house right now to bury that sock.” She turned and marched out, a woman on a mission.

Monica nibbled nervously on her fingernail. Hope wouldn’t seriously go through with casting the spell, would she? A big part of spell casting was psychological, focusing all your energy on making something happen. Monica had never seen Hope look so determined, or vindictive. Hopefully, if she did cast the spell the negative energy didn’t return threefold.

What was the worst that could happen?

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Eliza Daly’s first attempt at creative writing was in fourth grade. She and her friends were huge Charlie’s Angels fans and she would sit in her bedroom at night writing scripts for them to act out at recess the following day. She was Kelly Garrett. Fast forward to the present, she’s still writing stories about beautiful women who always get their men. The journey from fourth grade script writer to published author wasn’t an easy one, but it was always an adventure and the final destination was well worth it.

When Eliza isn’t traveling for her job as an event planner, or tracing her ancestry roots through Ireland, she’s at home in Milwaukee working on her next novel, bouncing ideas off her husband Mark, and her cats Quigley and Frankie.
